To change your MT5 investor password, open MetaTrader 5 on desktop, go to Tools, then Options, then the Server tab, click Change, enter your master password, choose the read-only (investor) option, and set the new one. That is the short version. Below is the full walkthrough for finding, creating, changing, and resetting it, on both desktop and mobile, plus a troubleshooting section for the most common reason it appears "not to work".
If you are not sure what the investor password actually is or why you would share it, read the MT5 investor password explainer first. The one-line version: it is a second, read-only password on your account that can view but never trade.
Where to find your MT5 investor password
MetaTrader does not show an existing investor password in plain text for security reasons. So "finding" it usually means one of two things.
- You still have the original. When your account was created, the broker often sent the investor password in the first "Registration" email, or it may be listed in your broker's client portal under the account details. Check there first.
- You do not have it. In that case you do not recover the old one, you set a new one using the steps below. Setting a new investor password is harmless: it does not affect your master login or your trading.
How to create or change it on desktop (recommended)
The desktop terminal is the most reliable place to manage passwords.
- Open MetaTrader 5 on your computer and make sure you are logged in to the account with your master password.
- Click Tools in the top menu, then Options.
- Go to the Server tab and click the Change button next to the password field. (On some builds this lives under a Security tab instead.)
- In the Current password field, enter your master password.
- Select Change investor (read-only) password.
- Type your new investor password in the New password field and again in Confirm.
- Click OK. The change is immediate.
Pick something at least five characters long, mixing at least two of uppercase, lowercase, and numbers, and different from your master password.
How to change it on mobile
The mobile apps can change passwords on most broker builds, though some restrict it to desktop.
iOS (iPhone or iPad)
- Open the MetaTrader 5 app and go to the Settings tab.
- Tap your account at the top, then the ... icon next to the current account.
- Tap Change Password, then Change Investor Password.
- Enter your master password, then the new investor password twice, and confirm.
Android
- Open the app and tap the menu icon in the upper-left corner.
- Tap Manage accounts, then Change password.
- Select Change investor password, enter your master password, then the new investor password twice.
How to reset it if you have lost the master password too
Changing the investor password requires the master password. If you have lost both, you cannot reset them from inside MetaTrader. Contact your broker's support and ask them to reset the account passwords. They will verify your identity and issue new credentials.
Rotating it is your kill switch for third-party tools
Changing the investor password instantly invalidates every read-only connection using the old one, without affecting your own trading login. So if you have shared it with an app, a signal-verification site, or a journal and want to cut that access, just change it. This is the cleanest way to revoke a tool you no longer trust. More on that in is it safe to share your investor password.
Troubleshooting: investor password not working
Most "my investor password is not working" reports are one of the following. Work through them in order.
The New Order button is greyed out
This is not a fault. A read-only login cannot trade, so the order buttons are disabled by design. If you intended to trade, log out and log back in with your masterpassword instead. The investor password is working exactly as intended.
Invalid account or login failed
- Case-sensitivity. MetaTrader passwords are strictly case-sensitive. One wrong capital letter fails the login.
- Hidden spaces. Copying credentials from a welcome email often pulls in an invisible leading or trailing space. Type the password by hand to be sure.
- Wrong server. The same login can exist on multiple broker servers. Make sure you selected the exact server name from your account details.
- No investor password set. Some brokers issue only a master password by default. If you never created an investor password, set one using the desktop steps above.
Still stuck
If none of the above works, the investor password may have been reset on the broker side. Contact your broker's support to confirm or reissue it.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my MT5 investor password?
On the desktop MetaTrader 5 terminal, go to Tools, then Options, then the Server tab, and click Change. You can set or reset the investor (read-only) password there. MetaTrader does not display an existing password in plain text, so if you do not know it, you set a new one. Some brokers also include the original investor password in the Registration email or in your client portal.
How do I change the investor password in MT5?
Open MetaTrader 5 on desktop, go to Tools, then Options, then Server, and click Change. Enter your current master password, select the option to change the investor (read-only) password, type the new password twice, and confirm. The change takes effect immediately.
Can I change the investor password on the MT5 mobile app?
On iOS, open the account menu, tap the three dots next to your current account, choose Change Password, then Change Investor Password. On Android, open the menu, tap Manage accounts, then Change password, then Change investor password. Note that some broker builds restrict password changes to the desktop terminal.
What are the rules for a valid investor password?
A MetaTrader password must be at least five characters and contain at least two of three character types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. Passwords are case-sensitive. Choose an investor password that is different from your master password.
Why is my investor password not working?
The most common cause is logging in with the investor password and expecting to trade: the New Order button is greyed out because read-only logins cannot trade, which is normal. Other causes are case-sensitivity, hidden spaces copied from a welcome email, using the wrong server, or a broker that never issued an investor password. Re-check the exact credentials and server, or contact your broker to reset it.
The summary
Manage your MT5 investor password from Tools, Options, Server, Change on desktop, or the account password menu on mobile. You cannot view an old one in plain text, so if it is lost you simply set a new one, which never affects your trading login. And because rotating it instantly revokes read-only access, it doubles as your kill switch for any third-party tool. When you are ready to connect it to a discipline app, EmotionLock uses the investor password only.
